The Ad Hoc Working Group on Free Expression (FEWG) presented its final report on September 1, 2022. The report included a proposed statement on freedom of expression and academic freedom, as well as recommendations. The MIT statement on Freedom of Expression and Academic Freedom was approved by the MIT faculty on December 21, 2022. 

In January 2024, the Committee on Academic Freedom and Campus Expression was charged to “bring together students, staff, and faculty to develop a Campus Expression Roadmap for the Institute.” The roadmap will build upon the recommendations of the FEWG report. The full charge to the committee and membership list can be found here. 

The Committee is co-chaired by Professors Michael Sipser and Anette (Peko) Hosoi.

In order to ensure committee members have robust discussions around these issues, strict confidentiality is maintained among members. While input may be sought by committee members of their community, what is discussed during meetings will remain, broadly, confidential.
