What is a custom domain name?

A custom domain name provides a site address for your CampusPress site. By default, all sites are available at https://sites.mit.edu/yoursite. With a custom domain name, the site would also be available at https://yoursite.mit.edu.

The custom domain name only works for users that are not authenticated to CampusPress. Once authenticated to your site with Touchstone, you would be redirected to https://sites.mit.edu/yoursite.

What kind of sites are allowed to use custom domain names?

MIT Departments, Labs and Centers are eligible for a custom domain name. All custom domain names are subject to yearly review. Personal sites, portfolio sites, and CV sites will not be given custom domain names.

MIT Student groups sponsored through formal channels (those that request and receive written approval to be sponsored by a department, laboratory, or center) or clubs recognized by the Association of Student Activities are also eligible for a custom domain name.

A custom domain name will only be assigned once a site is ready for final publication to the internet. Sites that are ready for publication do not have ‘lorum ipsum’ placeholder text or placeholder images from the source template. Completed sites must include a valid contact address in the footer as well as the accessibility notice present on the front page.

What custom domain names are supported?

Only domain names of the format https://yoursite.mit.edu are permitted. Domain names from other top level domains are not allowed, and sub-domains are not permitted either.

Multiple custom domain names on the same site are not permitted.

How can I request a custom domain name?

Contact IS&T to request a custom domain name for your CampusPress site. All site name requests are subject to review.
