I am a scientist who specializes in neurophysiology and neuropharmacology. I hold a B.Sc. in Biochemistry from the University of Santiago de Chile, a Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Chile and joined MGH and HMS for my post-doctoral training. I am currently an Instructor in Anesthesia at MGH and HMS, where I conduct research on the neurophysiological effects of anesthetic drugs and supervise students and technicians.
My research expertise encompasses the fields of neurophysiology and neuropharmacology. After completing a five-year curricula for the B.Sc. in Biochemistry, I completed a thesis on the use of melatonin as a potential treatment for interhemispheric disconnection. Simultaneously, I conducted research on novel strategies for chronic pain treatment using ketamine and melatonin. After completion of my B.Sc., I joined the Ph.D. program in Biomedical Sciences at the University of Chile, where I further specialized in neurophysiology. For my thesis, I did study the neural activity of the primate visual cortex during free exploration of natural images. In parallel, I also conducted research on the neurophysiology of the olfactory system. I joined MGH and HMS as a post-doctoral trainee in the laboratory of Prof. Emery Brown, where I started working on the study of effects of anesthetic drugs in cortical and subcortical brain regions. I also did work developing and automated system for multiple patch-clamp in vivo, and as part of the same project, collaborated in a study article describing a novel mechanism to modulate the probability of spiking in single neurons. I became an instructor at MGH and HMS at the end of 2017, and I am currently working on novel strategies to produce unconsciousness using non-invasive deep brain stimulation, and multielectrode, multisite recordings during sleep and drug-induced loss and recovery of consciousness.
Regarding teaching and mentoring, I have been actively involved in supervision of more than fourteen technicians, undergraduate, and graduate students. In addition, I have taught in the course “Brains, Minds and Machines” at Woods Hole on principles of neuroscience and fundamentals of programming. I have also organized and taught in the workshop “Analysis of time-series data” in the University of Chile.
