Silt was built over the course of the 2023-2024 academic year at MIT’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning (DUSP), with the hope of creating a space for fellow students to share their thoughts, reflections, and stories with one another. For this issue’s theme, HOME /NOT HOME, we asked for contributions related, but not limited, to the following: moving, calling many places home, homeland, homesickness, visions of home, creating a home, and much more.
This issue is an experiment in collaboration and vulnerability that exists solely because of our dedicated executive team, the authors who populated these pages, and the countless professors, writers, and designers who have guided us through this process. Thank you to the Bemis Fund for supporting our first issue, and to the DUSP Student Council for kickstarting Silt’s existence last fall.
We want Silt to join the ecosystem of student-run publications that uplift creative voices and lived experiences. Our intention is to publish in print bi-annually, with a new theme for each issue and a rolling submission process for features here throughout the year. We are already preparing our fall 2024 issue, so if you are interested in joining our team or submitting work, please send us a message at siltmag@mit.edu. We are so excited to be here!
